Kentlands' Main Street functions as the neighborhood's downtown, and residents genuinely refer to it that way. Meredith Fogle of The List Realty walked the length of it to show what daily life along this stretch actually looks like, and what makes its design distinct.
Many of the buildings along Main Street are four-level structures designed around a live-work concept, inspired by traditional European village layouts where business owners lived above their storefronts. A typical building might house a retail shop or salon on the main level, a separate business or studio space in the lower level, another business on the second floor, and a residential apartment or townhome-style unit on top, some with their own separate entrances and attached garages accessible from the neighborhood's connecting muses.
Along the street, visitors will find a long-running tailor and shoe repair shop, a barber shop, hair salons, a dental office, an optometrist, insurance services, a florist, a jewelry shop offering repairs, and a wellness spa, alongside numerous dining options ranging from casual tacos and Greek food to sit-down restaurants with outdoor seating. Many of these businesses have operated in the same spaces for years, and most are independently or family-owned.
The neighborhood's original design intentionally clustered residences around Main Street like the spine of a book, with condos and townhomes closest to the street and larger single-family homes toward the outer edges, all connected by walkable paths so that residents can reach nearly any daily errand on foot. Traffic circles along the route help keep car traffic calm and pedestrian-friendly.
Every Saturday, a stretch of Main Street hosts a farmers market offering fresh produce, flowers, and local crafts, drawing a steady crowd throughout the year. A nearby pavilion and green space, along with an art gallery run by the Gaithersburg Artist Collective, add to the street's role as a community gathering point beyond just its businesses.
Kentlands Manor, a 55-and-over community located directly along Main Street, offers residents a way to simplify their living situation while remaining within easy walking distance of the same amenities and businesses they're used to.
The List Realty's office sits directly on Main Street, a location Fogle describes as a long-held goal tied to being genuinely embedded in the community the brokerage serves. A commercial space is currently available next door for anyone interested in locating a business along this stretch.
If you're curious about what daily life looks like in Kentlands, or you're considering a move to the neighborhood, reach out to The List Realty. A walk down Main Street tends to make the case better than words can.
